For the first time in almost seven years, the Islanders will have a new head coach behind their bench when they take on the Dallas Stars for the first time this season.
Weight in, Capuano out:
Well, perhaps the biggest storyline to follow for tonight’s game is behind the bench. A day after a 4-0 shutout win again the Boston Bruins (the franchise’s first ever shutout in Boston), the Islanders fired their head coach Jack Capuano. With that, assistant coach and assistant GM, Doug Weight has been named the interim head coach. Tonight marks Doug Weight’s first game as a head coach in the NHL.
It looks like with the switch over to adidas, no team will have third jerseys next season. Tonight the Islanders are expected to wear their Brooklyn Pride third jerseys in what could be one of the final times.
The past few games against the Stars over the last three or four seasons have been high scoring, especially when the Islanders are the home team. The Stars are always a high scoring team, in fact they’re coming off a 7-6 win over the Rangers. The Islanders in the past and the Islanders of late have been scoring more with four or more goals in their last three games. In the Islanders last three home games against the Stars two Islanders have had hat tricks. In the 2013-2014 season John Tavares had a hat trick in a 7-4 win, in the 2014-2015 season Frans Nielsen had a hat trick in a 6-4 win, and last season Cal Clutterbuck and Kyle Okposo both had two goals in a 6-5 win. However, their last game was last season in Dallas where the Isles were shutout by the Stars 3-0.
