Islanders and Golden Knights Complete Big Trade

The Vegas Golden Knights have selected goaltender J-F Berube from the Islanders in the Expansion Draft. The Islanders also trade Mikhail Grabovski, Jake Bischoff, this year’s first rounder (15th overall), and a second rounder in 2019 to Vegas.

Jake Bischoff was the Isles’ seventh round selection in the 2012 NHL draft. In late March, the Islanders signed Bischoff to an entry-level deal. After that, Bischoff signed an amateur tryout (ATO) with the Sound Tigers. The defenseman had two goals and one assist in six games with the Isles’ AHL affiliate.

Berube’s play has undoubtedly gotten worse under the three-goalie system which has been implemented in Brooklyn since the start of the 2015-2016 season (minus a few short months when Jaroslav Halak was in Bridgeport). In his first NHL season, Berube put up pretty solid numbers in limited appearances (3-2-1, 2.71 goals against average, .914 save percentage). This past season, still with only a few starts Berube went 3-2-2 with a 3.42 GAA and a .889 save %. Berube, who is a restricted free agent this summer, probably wasn’t going to re-sign with the Isles either way. They still have Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak and ultimately, it wouldn’t be beneficial to either party.

Mikhail Grabovski was one of a few signings in what has been known as the Summer of Garth which took place during the 2014 offseason. It started off at the NHL Draft where he selected Michael Dal Colle and traded up to draft Josh Ho-Sang. In addition, via trades and free agency he was able to bring in goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Chad Johnson, defensemen Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk, and forwards Nikolay Kulemin and Grabovski. Grabovski signed a four-year deal worth $20 million (5 million AAV) and now approaches the final season on that contract. While Grabovski was sidelined the entirety of this past season, he saw a combined 109 games the two seasons prior. Grabovski, who has been reportedly struggling with concussion issues, scored 18 goals and 26 assists over that two season span.
