Center Casey Cizikas is apparently out for awhile and with John Tavares taking a maintenance today after what looked like a hand or wrist injury yesterday against the Bruins, the Islanders have made a precautionary move prior to the NHL holiday roster freeze. That move is signing center Stephen Gionta to a two-way deal and then calling him up from Bridgeport. Gionta played in all 82 games with the Devils last season scoring one goal and 10 assists. Before the preseason started he signed a PTO (professional tryout contract) with the Islanders. He played well, even scoring a goal against his former team, before breaking his foot. He signed an AHL deal with the Sound Tigers and since returning from injury he has a goal and two assists through seven games. To read more about Gionta, check out an article I wrote about him at the beginning of the season when he signed his PTO here.
